|Bansko is the best ski resort in Bulgaria and a favorite ski and snowboard destination for many Bulgarian and foreign skiers. It features the best ski center and the longest ski season of all Bulgarian ski resorts. The ski season in Bansko lasts from 15 December to 15 May.
Bansko is famous among tourists basically as a skiing and a snowboarding destination. The resort is located at the footsteps of Pirin, which is an Alpine type mountain with its highest peak – Vihren (2914 m). The town of Bansko is located 925 m above the sea level whereas its ski area – at an altitude of 2000 m and the highest point of the ski center is at 2560 m.
During the past few years a multimillion euro investment in a brand new skiing area has been made by the company that runs the skiing area of Bansko. Numerous new luxury hotels and facilities were constructed near the lift station.
Now the total length of the ski tracks is 75 kilometers, and the longest of ski track is 16 kilometers long. About 90% of all tracks are equipped with snow canons for long-lasting and high-quality artificial snow cover.There are all kinds of difficulty ski tracks and the greatest challenge for the skiers in Bansko is the track Tomba, named after the Italian skier Alberto Tomba.
A cabin lift takes the tourists from the starting point of the ski lift station (Gondola) in the town of Bansko to Banderishka Polyana. The town is connected with the ski zone and with a 7 km long ski road. There is also an open-air ice skating ring during the winter season.
During the summer season the roads and the ski tracks can also be used as routes for mountain cycling. The ski resort is also popular among tourists during the summer season, because of the various types of activities and sports that can be practiced there – mountain climbing, horse riding, mountain passages, rafting in the region of Kresnensko defile, etc.
